Residential propane tanks range in capacity from 120 gallons to 1,000 gallons. The size of your tank depends greatly on your usage. The most common size for a home propane tank is 500 gallons.

The below summary provides an overview of the size, dimensions and most common uses for each size propane tank. Please note sizes may vary by manufacturer. 

1,000 Gallon Propane Tank

Uses: Larger homes with all appliances running on propane. Temporary heat jobs where the tank will be powering multiple heaters with all day usage

Size: Approximately 16' long and 41" in diameter

Gallons: Holds 800 gallons when filled to 80% (this is the highest % a propane tank can be filled to)  

500 Gallon Propane Tank

Uses: Most common size tank for home owners. Average or above average homes running most or all appliances 

Size: 9' 11" long and 37" in diameter 

Gallons: Holds 400 gallons when filled to 80% (this is the highest % a propane tank can be filled to)

250 Gallon Propane Tank

Uses: Used for supplemental heating, water heaters, generators and or pool heaters

Size: 7' 10" long and 30" in diameter 

Gallons: Holds 200 gallons when filled to 80% (this is the highest % a propane tank can be filled to)

120 Gallon Propane Tank

Uses: Commonly used in mobile home parks or for single appliances such as dryer or heater alone 

Gallons: Holds 96 gallons when will filled to 80% (this is the highest % a propane tank can be filled to)

**All Propane Tanks can only be filled to 80% of capacity due to expansion of gas**
